DesktopVisionMCP is a menu bar app that lets your AI assistant request a screenshot when you ask it to. This page covers the small number of things needed to get it working.
Set up your assistant
- Open DesktopVisionMCP from the menu bar.
- Choose AI assistant instructions (copy).
- Paste those instructions into your assistant and let it configure its MCP connection.
The app must stay running with serving switched on while your assistant uses it.
Grant Screen Recording permission
DesktopVisionMCP needs macOS Screen Recording permission before it can return a screenshot. If macOS asks, allow it. If you previously declined, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, enable DesktopVisionMCP, then quit and reopen the app.
Check that it works
Ask your configured AI assistant to look at your screen. If it can describe what is currently visible, DesktopVisionMCP is connected and working.
- Your assistant cannot see the screen: make sure DesktopVisionMCP is running and serving, then copy the assistant instructions again and ask it to check its MCP configuration.
- macOS says Screen Recording permission is not granted: grant the permission above, then reopen the app if macOS asks you to.
Privacy
Screenshots are requested by your assistant; DesktopVisionMCP does not continuously record your display. Read the privacy policy for details about where images go and what stays on your Mac.
